Nanking – Gives Royal Service

Posted on 11 September 2010 by Steven

5 stars to Nanking!

Nanking is a Chinese restaurant just west of the city centre, a couple of blocks from Stockmann, on Kalevankatu.

I went last Friday with a friend and was very impressed with the food.

The ambience

The Atmosphere in the restaurant was very warm, and inviting with traditional Asian music in the background provided just the right mood for a relaxing evening. The restaurant had a good mix of dimly lite lamps and table candles. The interior was  quite fitting to the experience. If you accidentally woke up in the restaurant you would assume you were transported to Shaghai. For an Asian Restaurant in Helsinki, that is rare.

Table Service

The waitress on the evening, was a very friendly Chinese women, who had no issue with delivering a menu both in English and in Finnish for my friend and dealing with us both in the language which was most comfortable.

The table service was truely remarkable, from regular top ups of our water glasses when it was getting low to an explanation of the Jasmine tea drinking culture in China. It was a real experience, and not just a exchange of a a service for money.

The Menu

The menu which as mentioned is available is multiple languages had a wide selection of dish to choose from as well as recommended set menus. My friend and I both went for the Menu A

Appetizer : Soup or Spring Rolls

Main: Chicken and Beef (with rice as standard)

Dessert: Choice of, Banana Split or Pinapple Split

The starter and the dessert were both delicious, very savoury. The main course chicken and beef had amazing flavours with herbs and vegetables enhancing the flavour from every last bite. I liked especially the chicken which was just divine, the sauce and the rice combined made for one hot meal.

Price

For the amazing restaurant setting, great service and an awesome set menu the price was shockingly only 14.50. You would pay the same if not more, in most restaurants in Helsinki for a smaller portioned main course, worse service and a more sterile Aallto-esque setting.

Faults

My friend and I both ordered from the set menu, I ordered the Spring rolls for starter, while my friend ordered the Soup. The soup arrived to the table 5 minutes before my spring roll did. Is that something cultural in China? Maybe, I was really getting the full experience.

The gents was not very well equipped, it was clean to the Finnish standard of restaurant toilets but there was no bin in the men’s toilet to depose of the paper towel. Leaving me to abandone my paper towel on the sink.

**Also Lunch**

I have eaten in Nanking before at lunchtime, its lunch menu is quite good, quick and quality service for a price range less than 8euro. Its a must try place for Asian food lovers at lunchtime also.

More Details about the location are here
